History of Bangladesh Tea Industry
It dates back to around 1823 when tea started to be grown for commercial purposes in the Assam forests.
Tea plantation in Bengal developed in the northeastern part of India during the early 19th century.
In 1855, the Assam indigenous tea plant was established in Chandghani Hills of Sylhet.
Around 1840, tea plantation started in Chittagong.
The first commercial tea plantation started in 1857 at Mulnichera, Sylhet.
At present, Bangladesh has a total number of 163 tea estates and the 114 tea factories.
The total garden area is 115,629.76 hector.
The tea is one of cash crop of Bangladesh.
